The Shadwell Travers
This year marks the
141st running of the oldest thoroughbred race
in the United States. First run in 1864, it was
named so in honor of William Travers, who had the Saratoga race track built the year before, along with Leonard Jerome and John Hunter.
The Travers Stakes, held yearly at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, is America's oldest stakes race in continuous existence. Often called the "Mid-Summer Derby", the race is a nail-biting contest of stakes race winners. In this year's race the winners of the Florida Derby, the Kentucky Derby & the Jim Dandy compete against each other for the million dollar purse. Could Hall of Famer Nick Zitto be the first to take First, Second, & Third with the possibility of three horses running?
Historically, the Travers is the most attended race of the season at Saratoga Race Course. Beat the crowds & watch the race in comfort at WHEATFIELDS Restaurant & Bar in downtown Saratoga Springs.
